DARPA advances Boeing’s Phantom Swift
Boeing’s ‘Phantom Swift’ prototype for DARPA’s VTOL Experimental Aircraft (X-Plane) programme has advanced to the next stage of development.
Valued at $130 million, the VTOL X-Plane project represents a 52 month effort to design and develop an experimental aircraft that flies faster than 300 knots, with a hover efficiency of 75 percent or better and a cruise lift-to-drag ratio of ten or more.
DARPA has promoted Boeing’s Phantom Swift X-Plane prototype through to the Phase 1B Technology Maturation stage of the competition, according to an announcement on 27 August.
