Simulation training for Dutch Chinook crews updated
Simulator training for pilots of Dutch Chinook helicopters is being modernised.
The Royal Netherlands Air Force is also expanding the number of training hours, after a contract was signed between the country's Defense Materiel Organization and CAE Aircrew Training Systems at RAF Benson (United Kingdom)
By increasing the number of Chinook helicopters and flight personnel, the need arose for the current simulator capacity to expand and improve. In 2007, six new Chinook transport helicopters were purchased taking the number of Dutch Chinooks to 17. The new helicopters are equipped with the "Avionics Control and Management System (ACMS) Block-6 cockpit.
The new contract means an increase in the number of training hours, additional functionality and an upgrade to the "Block-6 cockpit of the new Chinook. The development of the new simulator to the "Block-6 is due to be complete in September 2011.
Modernising the cockpit will allow the crews to prepare for missions. New training scenarios will be created using knowledge and experience gaining from both UK and Dutch pilots. This will include use of geographic databases including scenery from Afghanistan.
The Dutch Chinook pilots have been making use of the Chinook simulator at Benson since 2003/ The simulator is owned by the Royal Air Force.
