Russia eyes new bases to project global power

Recent statements from senior military commanders, as well as insight gleaned by Shephard from military analysts, indicate that Russia is intent on expanding and reinforcing its network of overseas bases.

As part of these plans, the Russian MoD may consider reactivating bases dating from the Soviet era. Such a possibility was raised recently by Nikolay Pankov, the deputy defence minister, who referred directly to the Cam Ranh naval base in Vietnam, as well as the Lourdes SIGINT base in Cuba.
