Romania stays the course with Piranha V

Romania will maintain its programme to acquire the Piranha V 8x8 APC, as the NATO member state continues plans to modernise the Romanian Army's wheeled armoured vehicle fleet.

A spokesperson for the Romanian Ministry of National Defence (MND) confirmed to Shephard that the procurement process is continuing, without delays, in accordance with the contract provisions.

Piranha V and 'derivatives of the same platform' are needed to ensure Romanian Army capabilities match NATO requirements, the spokesperson claimed.

The new vehicles are intended to replace Romania's fleet of legacy 8x8 licence-produced BTR-60/70/80 APCs and locally built TABC-79
