Euronaval: DCNS introduces SMX-Ocean (video)

DCNS has unveiled the SMX-Ocean diesel-electric attack submarine (SSK) at Euronaval, which draws on technologies from its nuclear-powered submarine portfolio.

The company introduced the concept at the Euronaval exhibition in Paris, displaying a model of a submarine that will be 100m in length, with a displacement of 4,750t, a maximum diving depth of 350m and a maximum speed when submerged of 20 kts. 

DCNS marketing director for submarines Xavier Mesnet said the SMX-Ocean was more than a concept ship because it was realisable, taking technology from the SSN Barracuda and transposing it into a diesel submarine.
