Belarusian troops will join a major Russian military exercise to be held in late September.

Russian Deputy Defence Minister Col Gen Alexander Fomin (pictured) told foreign military attaches on 11 September that Exercise Kavkaz-2020 will also involve units from Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, China, Iran, Myanmar and Pakistan.

The exercise on 21-26 September will focus on the Southern Military District. It will involve about 80,000 personnel from air defence units, the Russian Navy, civil defence organisations and the army (with up to 250 tanks, up to 450 IFVs and APCs, and about 200 artillery systems and MLRS units.

The Belarus Army has been deployed on numerous occasions since 9 August to quell internal unrest, as popular protests continue against the regime of President Alexander Lukashenko after a disputed election.

Lukashenko has called for military support from Russia, but so far this has been confined to joint military exercises.
