Type-X makes progress in mobility tests
The Type-X Robotic Combat Vehicle (RCV) has passed initial mobility tests, Estonia-based manufacturer Milrem Robotics announced on 7 January.
The medium-class 12t UGV ‘provides means to breach enemy defensive positions with minimal risk for own troops and replacing a lost RCV is purely a logistical nuance,’ said Kuldar Väärsi, CEO of Milrem Robotics.
Type-X was unveiled in June 2020 to support mechanised units equipped with IFVs. The vehicle is 2.2m high and its rear engine emits a low visual and heat signature.
The UGV can be armed with a cannon up to 50mm. With a 30mm cannon it is air-droppable with one unit transported in a Lockheed Martin C-130J Super Hercules or Embraer KC-390 Millennium airlifter, two in an Airbus A400M and five in a Boeing C-17 Globemaster III.
While Milrem is understood to be interested in offering the Type-X to several NATO militaries, it has not disclosed any potential customers for the system. However, Shephard Defence Insight notes it is likely that the US Army will be interested in assessing the system for its Robotic Combat Vehicle - Heavy (RCV-H) programme.
