Hungary confirms major Lynx deal
The Hungarian government on 10 September announced it has placed an official order with German manufacturer Rheinmetall for 218 KF41 Lynx IFVs.
Nine Buffalo armoured recovery vehicles https://www.shephardmedia.com/... are also included in the deal, which has an overall value of more than €2 billion ($2.37 billion).
The contract includes additional products and services such as simulators; training and instruction; an initial supply of spare parts; and maintenance support.
The Lynx IFVs for Hungary will be equipped with a manned 30mm Lance turret (pictured) developed by Rheinmetall. Most of these turrets in the first production phase will be built in Australia at the Rheinmetall Military Vehicle Centre of Excellence in Brisbane, Queensland.
An initial batch of 46 Lynx vehicles (built in Germany) will be delivered by early 2023, but the remaining 172 IFVs will be made in Hungary by a new JV, as reported by Shephard last month.
Rheinmetall will hold a majority stake and take the lead in the Hungary-based for Lynx production. ‘In the process, Hungary will make a material investment in the project in the form of a newly constructed production facility,’ Rheinmetall added in a 10 September statement.
Hungary is the first NATO member to order Lynx, which is also a contender in IFV procurement programmes in the Czech Republic and Australia.
