Abaco supports Ghostrider HUD upgrade
The side-mounted HUD in AC-130J Ghostrider gunships is being upgraded by Abaco Systems to optimise operational visibility, in a contract worth up to $4.5 million from USAF Special Operations Command.
Following a competitive selection process, the MAGIC1A high-performance embedded computing system from Abaco was chosen. The company claimed on 9 February that MAGIC1A exceeded requirements for key upgrade features ‘including increased storage space for mission and flight data, higher processing capacity, and cybersecurity capabilities’.
MAGIC1A will be delivered in Q1 2021.
Ghostrider replaces the AC-130H Spooky gunship. Shephard Defence Insight notes that the newer aircraft is armed with PGM delivery capabilities and trainable 30mm and 105mm weapons, a mission management console, robust communications suite, two EO/IR sensors and advanced fire-control equipment.
