ADF admits illegal killings in Afghanistan

A limited number of Australian special forces personnel stand accused of war crimes in Afghanistan, with 36 incidents referred for criminal investigation.

On 19 November the Australian Defence Force (ADF) released its much-anticipated report on allegations of illegal killings performed by Australian special forces personnel in Afghanistan from 2005-16.

The cover of the report – simply entitled ‘Inspector-General of the Australian Defence Force [IGADF] Afghanistan Enquiry Report’ – came with the warning, ‘This report contains objectionable material. Appropriate care is to be taken to limit exposure…’ It took four years to investigate and compile.
